Last I heard from the company, American Express was focusing on acquiring customers for its fee-paying cards, so it’s been a while since they offered a sign-up reward for the likes of Amex True Cash Back. This month, however, they are started to push their cashback card with a S$80 sign-up reward on top of the usual 3% cashback on the first S$5,000 spend for new Amex customers.
If you prefer miles and lifestyle perks, there is still time to get Amex Platinum Charge’s 140,000 points offer.
Amex True Cash Back – S$80 plus upsized 3% cashback
To qualify, you need to sign up for the card below and spend at least S$500 within the first 30 days from card approval. Aside from Grab top-ups which were excluded from April 2023, just about anything else you can use the Amex card at would count towards the spend requirement as well as get cashback from the card.
Speaking of cashback, as a new True Cash Back cardholder, you will get 3% cashback on the first S$5,000 of eligible transactions in the first 6 months from card approval. That’s as much as S$150 of cashback and very useful for big expenses that would blow through other cards’ monthly caps.

- 3% Cashback on all eligible purchases up to S$5,000 spend in the first 6 months for new Card Members
- S$80 cash via PayNow
Last date to apply: 31st January 2024
1.5% cashback on transactions except Grab top-ups
Amex Platinum Charge – 140,000 Membership Rewards® points
The Amex True Cash Back card is a simple, no-frills cashback card – the polar opposite of the Amex Platinum Charge. The value proposition of this card that costs S$1,744 (inclusive of 9% GST) requires more explanation, but the gist of it is that you would very likely derive value in excess of its annual fee at least for the first year.
The card offers S$1,354 of annual credits which I estimate to be around S$800 in realistic value, and you will get S$1,354 credits for 2024 and another set next year. Moreover, you also get the welcome offer of 140,000 points when you meet S$6,000 of spending within the first 2 months of card approval. That’s as much as 87,500 miles which is why I think the annual fee is well worth it.
These are also on top of other perks and features of the card such as accelerated membership upgrades. You can get Hilton Gold membership with it which can get you free breakfast at Hilton’s chain of hotels. The list of benefits is very long but if the perks I mentioned already appeal to you, you should definitely take a closer look at the card benefits, many of which might appeal to you but don’t register on my radar.
In case you’re not aware, the annual income requirement of the card has also been waived. You just need at least S$30,000 annual income to qualify for the card, and this is the regulatory requirement to apply for credit cards in Singapore.

What to spend on?
You need to meet the minimum spend to qualify for rewards, and note that there are transactions which are excluded. Read the terms and conditions carefully when signing.
Generally, retail transactions like buying stuff or dining out are very safe. Things like bill payments, education expenses and CardUp or ipaymy become a lot iffier.
Do check out this article on what you can spend on to meet the minimum spend:
